






High School Program
The Providence Center School requires each student to participate in a
program of studies that provides the opportunity to demonstrate he/she
has achieved proficiencies in six core academic areas (English Language
Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Fine Arts and Technology)
and learner outcomes (see below). The Providence Center School program
of studies is designed to assure that all students successfully complete
a program that provides skill development and preparation for a variety
of post-secondary options including employment, military service or
post-secondary education or training. The curriculum at TPCS is aligned
with RI Grade Span Expectations and all students participate in
character education and pre-vocational skill classes. Pre-vocational
skill development is accomplished through participation in community
placements and during in-school independent living skills classes.
The Providence Center School Learner Outcomes
Students in the High
School Program of The Providence Center School will demonstrate:
1.
they are effective communicators who clearly and confidently speak,
read, listen and write to relay or obtain information.
2. they
can employ effective and creative problem solving procedures who can
present practical solutions and reflect on their thought process.
3.
they are
respectful, ethical, responsible and courteous individuals who can work
both independently and cooperatively by following the rules of the
school and society.
4. they
have an understanding of and an ability to utilize the basic techniques
of stress management to appropriately manage their emotions and
interactions.
5.
they
demonstrate preparedness for transition to post-secondary
education/training, independent living and employment.
Graduation
requirements:
The
Providence Center School also has in place proficiency based graduation
requirements which include:
1. the completion of a portfolio of academic achievement and senior
career research presentation.
2. completion of required courses for graduation. Currently a minimum of
twenty credits for RI students: 4 English Language Arts credits, 4
Mathematic credits, 3 Science credits, 3 History/Social Studies credits,
and six additional required academic credits sufficient to allow the
students to demonstrate a range of proficiency in the six core content
areas.
3. participation in the New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP)
state assessment.
Schedule:
Students arrive at approximately 8:30 and begin each day in their
homerooms which are based on grade. Physical education and health are
once per week and are a held with 2 grades combined (9th and
10th together, 11th and 12th
together). Students participate in the electives of visual arts, music,
drama character education and academic recovery once each week during
Get Ahead Periods (GAP). The GAP period is each day from 1:00 to 2:00.
Beginning at 9:00 students move through the program’s four classrooms
throughout the day to participate in Social Studies, English Language
Arts, Science and Mathematics. Each class lasts approximately an hour.
Pre-vocational classes are held on Tuesday and Fridays from 10:00 to
12:30. On one of the days, students participate in a community
activities and the other day students complete activities in-school for
more independent living.
Therapeutic Program:
The Providence Center School uses a point system to reinforce the PBIS
character traits of respect, responsibility and safety. Students earn
points throughout the day which they may “cash-in” to enhance their
participation in community based activities which promote age
appropriate social and leisure skills. Support from staff is available
throughout the day and instruction for the development and enhancement
of age- appropriate coping skills is ongoing.
