CURRICULUM OVERVIEW
Introduction
The students
in the 6th/7th grade middle school experience theme-based units aligned
to the state standards. Each unit integrates reading, writing, social
studies, math, science and technology throughout the day. The curriculum
is geared to meet individual education plans while enhancing learning
through different modalities. Modifications and accommodations are used
to help focus on students’ strengths and create a positive learning
environment environment.
Math
Connected Mathematics is a comprehensive unit that teaches students math
through real life problem solving. In addition, we focus on math
vocabulary while we continue to review basic math skills to strengthen
student performance. Math is taught using direct teaching, partner
practice and extended activities to create a stimulating learning
environment.
Reading
Guided-reading groups focus on reading fluency and comprehension.
Students are exposed to different literary genres such as science
fiction and historical fiction. Different reading strategies are modeled
and practiced to help students become independent readers and connect
reading to their own lives. In addition, students have the opportunity
to read a variety of text to develop comprehension skills.
Writing
Written language is integrated into curriculum using different writing
techniques. Students practice collecting ideas, creating drafts,
revising, and editing work throughout the year. Vocabulary and spelling
are emphasized and practiced each week. Mini-lessons focus on skills
such as writing conventions, organization, and strategies for strong
writing fluency.
Science/Technology/Social Studies/Art
Hands-on science and geography activities help students understand
concepts, follow procedures, and enhance cooperative relations.
Technology is integrated throughout the curriculum in every unit. Each
week art is integrated within units to foster creativity.
