What is Pre-K/k

The PreK/K classroom consists of children between the ages of 3-6 years. We have a full-time special education teacher and teacher assistant. Although we are a preschool and kindergarten classroom, our students may be at developmental levels ranging from toddler through kindergarten.

Our primary focus is on creating a safe, nurturing environment where the children can feel free to explore materials and experience various activities in order to become caring and capable learners. Young children learn best when there is a daily schedule, which provides them with stability and security. They are able to enjoy the task at hand when they can predict what will happen next in their day. This is achieved by using both verbal and visual reminders of the daily routine.

Our staff provides direct and caring interactions, monitors development and individualizes planning so that each child can learn according to his/her specific needs. Our young students acquire knowledge by manipulating, exploring and experimenting with real objects and through repetition of newly acquired skills.
The whole child is considered when planning the curriculum, as they learn almost exclusively by doing and through movement.

The goals for children this age are:

SOCIAL
To develop awareness of others and the natural environment, which will allow the child to engage in meaningful interactions with others and to show respect for his/her surroundings.

EMOTIONAL
To learn self-control and to deal with frustration in a healthy manner.

PHYSICAL
To develop age appropriate gross and fine motor skills; to have mastery over own movements and to feel competent in own body.

LANGUAGE
To express one self verbally/non-verbally and to listen as others speak; to share information, exchange ideas, ask questions, and express feelings, to engage in meaningful conversation.

COGNITIVE

To become a capable and competent learner in all curriculum areas by participating with a variety of thematic experiences integrating all areas of development.

SELF-HELP
To develop independence and responsibility for self so that the child is able to take care of daily routines and feel that he/she has gained some control in his life and can learn new things.

CREATIVE
To develop a positive self-image that will allow the child to express his/her creativity through different mediums.
