Frequently Asked Questions for Parents

How do I enroll my child in The Providence Center School?
Students are referred to The Providence Center School by public school districts. Students have been identified as having emotional and/or behavioral needs that qualify them for special education services or through a 504 plan.

Will my child keep up with academic lessons that are being taught in our community school?
Our curriculum is based on the Rhode Island Statewide Curriculum for Grade Level Equivalents or Grade Level Standards . High school students work on Proficiency Based Graduation Requirements. Your child will be learning the appropriate lessons for his or her grade level.

How long does a student stay at The Providence Center School?
Each student’s length of stay depends on his or her individual needs. Our goal is to transition the student back to their community school or to a less restrictive program as soon as they have developed the skills to be successful.

Can a student graduate from The Providence Center School?
Students receive a diploma from their school district upon successful fulfillment of the proficiency-based graduation requirements. The Providence Center School presents certificates to students who have completed high school requirements of The Providence Center School’s program. If a student did not earn a diploma from the district and meets the criteria, the Individual Education Plan team will consider a fifth-year program such as a transition academy.

Are parents involved in planning the student’s program?
Yes, parents are an integral part of developing their child’s Individual Education Plan and learning therapeutic techniques to apply at home. Communication between family and the school is on-going, facilitated by the family support team and/or the classroom staff.

How often are reports sent to parents, advocates and the school districts?
Formal reports such as grade cards and Individual Education Plan progress notes are sent quarterly. Informal reports can be as frequent as daily, weekly or monthly. They can be by phone, in person or in a communication notebook

Is The Providence Center School an accredited or licensed program?
Yes, The Providence Center School is licensed by The Rhode Island Department of Education.

Are other services of The Providence Center available to students?
Yes, many of our students are involved in outpatient therapy and see the child psychiatrist for evaluations, therapy and medication.
