CURRICULUM OVERVIEW

Upper elementary students experience standards based units of instruction.

Students are taught through an integrated curriculum.  Each unit incorporates language arts, social studies, science, mathematics, and art activities. The class listens to prepared lessons and discusses information obtained. They work individually, in small groups, and as a whole class to gather information, perform experiments, and write reports. The students reflect on what they have learned and what they still want to know. Students use many different resources such as books, computers, internet web sites, libraries, community activities, and real life activities.

Students write in their journals on a daily basis, study spelling, read books and use their social skills. They visit the library and technology center often.  We have the Literacy Coordinator, Speech and Language Pathologist and School Psychologist come into our classroom on a weekly basis as well. They incorporate fun activities into our curriculum to help the students with their reading, writing, and social skills.

D.E.A.R.
Drop Everything And Read is a program put into the daily schedule where students read on their own for 15 minutes. Each student chooses a book at their own ability level. This program helps each child meet the state standard of reading 25 books a year. Each child will write a book report on each book they have read once they have completed it.

GET AHEAD PROGRAM (GAP)
GAP is a time at the end of the day for the students to catch up on unfinished work and homework. This program helps take anxiety away from students who worry about catching up in their class work or not understanding homework assignments.  There are also times during GAP where we will have a review lesson on something that has already been taught. This is a quiet, calm time at the end of the day to help students organize their work and prepare to go home.
